On a sloping surface - laying the roof

31/10/2024

We are back with construction updates! We are back in the Czech Republic from Kashitu, but we are still finalizing the presentation of the progress of the works that took place on the construction site.

For a while, the content was live from the handover ceremony, the finished building, the local community and that's because it takes us a few days to process all the posts 🙂 So, we broke the continuous flow of construction work in laying the trusses and now we are back with the roof construction.

We made a wooden flap on the deployed trusses, followed by the counterlaths, but since the project should sometimes be called Despite the Insects (remembering how the termites feasted on the trusses for a few hours), we also placed an insect net under the battens, actually a kind of roof mosquito net. We chose this measure because the resulting roof was unfortunately crooked in some places. Then followed the battens, which are used to anchor the roofing material.

We chose a trapezoidal sheet in white. And why white? Throughout the design of the building, we kept in mind to achieve the best possible final thermal stability in the finished building. In this case, the white colour of the surface ensures less heating of the material itself and therefore less heat radiating into the interior of the house. In short, it will not be so hot inside during the day.

And we really managed to keep this aspect nicely, during the day the thermometer in the new house was really more than a few degrees lower. It should be added that even the chosen bricks made of unfired clay, which we are researching at the CTU, have a great merit in this favourable aspect of the building, because they have better thermal-technical properties compared to conventional bricks. Returning to the masonry structure itself, we are working with two layers of bricks in the perimeter walls.

We would like to thank our colleague and friend Martin Kubín, editor of the TZB-info portal, for the drone photo. In fact, TZB-info lent Martin to us for almost a month to visit Kasitu and see local life and the construction itself with his own eyes. At the same time, TZB-info and ESTAV are publishing interesting reports about our project in Kashitu and we will soon recap how the construction went and what our impressions of this year are.

Greetings, still from Kashitu in thought, but physically already from Prague and we look forward to seeing you soon at the accompanying events!
